Time and the Sun

The clock uses the time and time zone configured in your browser. No geolocation is required. Astronomical calculations use UTC and the selected date. The Sun marker shows the point on Earth directly beneath the Sun, not your location.

The Sun's position is calculated from Julian date, solar declination and the equation of time using NOAA/Meeus-based formulas. Earth's axial tilt changes the shape of the day and night boundary with the seasons. The simulation can show a selected date or run at accelerated speed.

Sunrise and sunset in capitals

Hover over or tap a yellow capital marker to see the last sunrise or sunset and the next event. Times are shown in the city's time zone, with your browser's time in parentheses. Calculations use a solar altitude of −0.833°. Actual visibility can vary with weather, terrain and atmospheric conditions; polar day and polar night may mean the next event is months away.

Approximate flight routes

Choose two capitals in Flight mode to draw a great-circle route on Earth. Estimated flight time is the route distance divided by 800 km/h. The airplane illustrates the route; it is not live flight tracking. Wind, takeoff, landing and actual airways are not included.

Интерактивная карта показывает день, сумерки и ночь в реальном времени. Граница дня и ночи — солнечный терминатор — рассчитывается по дате и времени UTC с учётом наклона земной оси и времени года. Жёлтый значок Солнца обозначает подсолнечную точку, а не ваше местоположение.

Часы берут время и часовой пояс из браузера без определения геолокации. При наведении или нажатии на жёлтую метку столицы можно увидеть последнее и следующее событие — рассвет или закат. Время указано для города, а в скобках — для вашего часового пояса. Расчёт приблизительный: рельеф и погода могут влиять на видимость Солнца.

В режиме «Полёт» выберите две столицы: карта покажет маршрут по дуге большого круга и примерное время при скорости 800 км/ч. Это иллюстрация маршрута, а не отслеживание рейса. Можно изменять масштаб карты, задавать дату и ускорять движение времени.
